We review your medical history and discuss any chronic conditions, like diabetes or high blood pressure, that can impact pregnancy. Then, we do a comprehensive physical exam, including a pelvic exam and Pap smear if needed.

Focus on nutrition — and start taking prenatal vitamins
Eating a nutrient-rich diet is one of the most effective ways to prepare your body for pregnancy. Work on incorporating plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats into your daily meals. Make sure you drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
Now is the perfect time to start taking a prenatal vitamin, too. Look for one that contains at least 400 mcg of folic acid, along with iron and calcium.
Folic acid is a B vitamin that’s essential for preventing neural tube defects in early pregnancy. Iron and calcium are nutrients that support healthy blood and bone development for both you and your baby.
Maintain a healthy weight
Being overweight or underweight can affect ovulation and increase your risk of pregnancy complications. If needed, we can work with you to develop a healthy weight management plan through balanced nutrition and regular exercise.
Moderate physical activity, like walking, swimming, or yoga, can improve fertility and overall well-being. Plus, you can continue low-impact exercises like these to maintain your health during pregnancy.
Manage stress and prioritize mental health
Chronic stress can interfere with ovulation and hormone regulation, and trying to get pregnant can create stress of its own. To help manage stress and anxiety, start incorporating habits like meditation, deep breathing, or yoga into your routine.
Seeking support from a therapist can also be beneficial in preparing for the emotional aspects of pregnancy.
Avoid harmful substances
To give your body the best chance at a healthy pregnancy, it’s important to avoid harmful substances even before you get pregnant. These include:
- Tobacco and recreational drugs
- Alcohol
- Excess caffeine (generally considered to be above 200 mg per day)
- Certain medications, including over-the-counter and prescription drugs, may not be safe for pregnancy
